Hi, I have a bit more information for you on Kankura Taiichi (the cinematographer on Kaijū Sōshingeki/Destroy All Monsters). Kankura-san filmed two more tokusatsu films for Toho (English titles “Latitude Zero” and “Space Amoeba/Yog, Monster From Space”). He retired from Toho in 1971 at age 60 (in Japan, we often compute age a little differently than in the USA-you are age one upon birth and add one to that age every New Year) and he passed away in 1981. He did have one posthumous credit, not for Toho but TVC Yamamoto-a jidaigeki (historical period film) in 1983, Yomigaeru Toudou (roughly “Rescue of Toudou”, a film about the burning of the Mt. Hiei temple complex by ‘demon king’ warlord Oda Nobunaga in 1571). Kankura-san was also a director in his early career, up until about 1954 when he became a full-time cameraman for Toho (so not all of his credits are as cinematographer).

Also, you can see the footage of Manda fighting Godzilla (and lots of other deleted scenes) on the “Toho Tokusatsu Movie Outtakes DVD”. Your regular ‘irregular’ supplier has it for $12.99 (Amazon JP has the official region two DVD, but it will not play on a region one “USA” player).

You are the best! 😀 Interesting to get more info on that specific cinematographer. Joe especially will be thrilled to learn more about him. We’ll be looking into that outtakes DVD for sure
